Volunteer

It takes a community to make one family’s dream come true.

Volunteer-Landing-PageVolunteers partner with our families to build homes. We welcome organizations, business groups, faith communities and individual volunteers of all kinds. Youth groups, knitting circles, golfing foursomes, and plain old regular Joes—we take them all.

You don’t need any construction experience to be a volunteer.
The only requirements are that you be eager to learn new skills, meet new friends and have fun. We guarantee that you will enjoy volunteering with us. Volunteer opportunities are Tuesdays through Saturdays each day of the month for homeowner applicants providing sweat equity as well as other volunteers working on homes, properties, or at the ReStore.

If working on a construction site is really not your thing, there are lots of other options. Many of our volunteers find satisfaction in planning fundraisers, preparing lunches for work crews, planting flowers, or donating their time volunteering at the ReStore.

Group Volunteers

There are many opportunities for churches, synagogues, businesses, civic groups and other organizations to volunteer. When you volunteer as a group, we’ll put you to work on whatever needs to be done for the phase of construction we’re in. You might do demo, pound nails, or do yard work. Come ready to jump in to a great experience with your team.

Here are a few of the things we might have you do:

  • Construction – Large groups wishing to volunteer can consider partnering on a specific home over multiple days.
  • Deconstruction – Deconstruction volunteers salvage reusable materials including wood flooring, cabinets, doors, etc. from area homes and businesses for resale in our Habitat ReStore.
  • Habitat Restore – ReStore volunteers may sort, clean and organize materials and help customers at our retail location.
  • Lunch/Snacks – Those who wish can prepare and serve lunches for Habitat work crews. We also love it when groups restock our freezer with home baked treats for our volunteers.
  • Host a Fundraiser – In addition to volunteers, it takes about $90,000 to build each Habitat home. We welcome your group’s assistance in helping us raise funds.

Individual Volunteers

Volunteering on a Habitat home is a great way to give back and to meet other people in your own community who care. If you want to volunteer on your own, we’ll find a spot for you. Individual volunteers are often placed with larger groups, so it’s a great place to meet like-minded people.

You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer on your own.

  • Construction – Construction volunteers are needed at all skill levels.
  • Deconstruction – Deconstruction volunteers salvage reusable materials including wood flooring, cabinets, doors, etc. from area homes and businesses for resale in our Habitat ReStores.
  • Habitat Restore – ReStore volunteers may sort, clean and organize materials and help customers at our retail location.
  • Lunch/Snack – Those who have culinary gifts can prepare and serve lunch or snack for Saturday building crews. This is a great way to meet Habitat volunteers and the families that are building with us.
  • Site Hosts
 – Do you want to be on the construction site, but not involved with actual construction? Site hosts help volunteers register, they welcome the volunteers, talk briefly about Habitat, coordinate coffee breaks, general site organization, lunch set-up and clean-up.
  • Landscaping – Help Habitat families choose, place and plant their landscaping and provide training for its care and maintenance.

To learn more about any of these individual volunteer opportunities, please visit our online calendar to find available workdays or call us anytime: (712) 328-9476.

Faith Groups

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization. Our work is based on the spiritual principles of helping those in need and putting our faith into action as God’s hands and feet in the world.

We eagerly welcome people from all faith groups—so no matter what you believe we hope you will join us in the goal of eliminating substandard housing in our community. Here are some ways that your church, synagogue, mosque or faith-based organization can join us:

Pray

  • Pray for the ministry of Habitat and its homeowners.
  • Lead a reflection and prayer at a build site, workshop, or housewarming ceremony.
  • Set aside one day a year in your faith community to draw attention to the need for safe, affordable, decent housing and to pray for God’s help in solving the problem. Habitat can provide a speaker, handouts, collection envelopes, statistics, or presentation materials.

Serve

  • Volunteer as an individual or a group on one of our worksites. Site supervisor, training, materials and tools are provided and there is no experience necessary.
  • Volunteer, Shop or Donate at Habitat ReStore. Proceeds from our Habitat ReStore builds four Habitat homes a year.
  • Refer a homeowner candidate. Connect us with someone you think may qualify for a Habitat home.
  • Involve your children or youth programs. Share with your children and youth ministries these Habitat-based children and youth activities. This low-key introduction of Habitat to your congregation provides teachers and youth leaders with ready-made curriculum (not to mention some fun ice-breaker games, crafts, and activities).
